You and I know that with the rate of unemployment in our society, the need for skill acquisition cannot be overemphasized.
A lot of young people want to venture into getting lot of skills without knowing what it entails or how to leverage on skills learned. When you hear the word “skills” what comes to your mind first? I’m sure tailoring, plumbing, hairdressing, and advanced minds can now include graphic designing.

According to Merriam-Webster, skills can be defined as a work or activity which requires training to be learned or improved on. Webster also defined skills as a learned power of doing things competently with a developed attitude and aptitude.
Getting skills does not just relate to having all and lacking professionalism and perfection in all i.e being a jack of all trades and master of none. The need and study of skills are broad and therefore require a lot of consistency, discipline, and hard work.
It’s so easy to spot someone that has spent time acquiring and enhancing different skills from someone who has not.
Skills can be grouped into types, categories, examples based on different criteria like functions, demand, income generated amongst other reasons.
Based on what skill entails, skills can be based on the functions, the person involved(self), and special traits and knowledge. Most times, understanding what skills entail can help a person know what particular skill he or she needs.
A lot of people are forced to learn and upgrade certain skills based on the role they function in. For example, someone that works in a corporate organization has to be computer literate. Therefore, computer training might be a necessary skill to learn for such individuals.
However, most people tend to learn skills based on the demand for that particular skill. Skills most times aim at meeting the needs of people so when a person notices the need for this particular skill, he or she might just take advantage of it and learn such skill.
Also, people tend to learn certain skills because of the income it generates. Of recent, the tech industry has been the leading thing because there are so many skill options to pick from and the high income-generating capacity.
In as much as, people tend to learn skills for different reasons the main purpose of getting skills is to provide solutions and aid productivity.
According to LinkedIn data, there are at least 50,000 professional skills in the world. Each of these skills is classified as either soft or hard skills. They can also be categorized into technical, human relations, and conceptual skills. Often a lot of people ask which ones are the most important? Well! No skill is more important than the other. Every skill has its role to play and often is connected. Skills like critical thinking and problem solving, teamwork and collaboration, professionalism and strong work ethic, oral and written communication skills, and even leadership are all inter-related. So next time before you jump on any skill, be sure to know what skill entails.
